Project overview
The Project
Vestas proposes to construct and operate a new wind farm of up to 164 wind turbines in the Western Downs region, capable of generating up to1.2GW of low-cost renewable energy. The Project will attract an estimated investment of more than $3 billion in the region, creating up to 400 jobs during construction and up to 40 long-term jobs.
Tara Wind Farm is committed to delivering long‑term benefits to the local community. For the duration of the Project, a Community Benefit Fund will be established and provide annual contributions of $1,050 per megawatt, equating to more than $1 million per year.
If approved, Tara Wind Farm will contribute to reducing up to 2.2 million tonnes of CO2.
Project location
Located six kilometres south of Tara, Queensland and approximately 300 kilometres west of Brisbane, the Project site will be up to 30 ,000 hectares. Only a very small proportion of this land will be disturbed during construction. Tara Wind Farm is compatible with existing agricultural and farming activities across the Project area, allowing land use to continue alongside energy generation.
Tara Wind Farm’s location was selected due to its strong and consistent winds and flat terrain, which are well suited to wind energy generation. Investigations and monitoring undertaken since 2022 confirm the region’s high wind resource potential. It is also close to the existing 330kV transmission line running between Braemar and Bulli Creek substations. The Project will involve construction of a transmission line easement of approximately 26-40km, to connect the wind farm to the existing 330kV line.
